Patient Safety Officer

Job Introduction

Are you passionate about making care safer and learning from what matters most? Do you wish to expand your skillset in relation to patient safety? We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and established (or willing to develop) Patient Safety Officer to play a pivotal role in strengthening our patient safety culture.

A Patient Safety Officer is an NMC/HCPC/GMC registered clinician who will provide expert support to local and national delivery teams in regard to Vita Health Group’s Patient Safety Incident Response Framework and Patient Safety Incidents. The Patient Safety Officer will play a key role in the development of a positive patient safety culture under the new Patient Safety Incident Response Framework; this will include supporting the implementation of the framework, investigating PSIs utilising a systems approach, and supporting safety action plan development and Quality Improvement activity organisation-wide at Vita Health Group. The postholder will demonstrate leadership, be skilled in effectively and sensitively engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and apply organisational skills and investigation methodologies to learning responses in alignment with the principles of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework and learning from patient safety event reporting.

As such the organisational policy and plan require regular review to ensure that opportunities for learning and patient safety concerns are appropriately captured and addressed which will include the Patient Safety Officer. The Patient Safety Officer will be part of a dynamic, forward thinking and supportive safety and risk team.

Skills and Experience (please see person specification for full requirements):

Essential:

  • Experience of working as a registered healthcare professional.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Accurate and comprehensive report writing whilst working to a deadline.
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural settings.
  • Confident in working with multiple stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Able to critically evaluate information and provide constructive challenge.
  • Ability to interpret and analyse complex information and evidence.
  • Ability to work with patients/patient groups/family/carers to understand and be inclusive of their perspectives.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft systems including excel, powerpoint, word.
  • Demonstrable passion for patient safety.
  • Willingness to learn and complete any relevant or required training

Desirable:

  • Liaising with stakeholders in various business roles (frontline clinicians, Integrated Care Boards, team leads, directors, managers)
  • Engaging patients in investigations in an empathetic and compassionate role. An awareness of and commitment to supporting and facilitating diversity and inclusion.
  • Coordinating patient safety incident investigation learning responses.
  • Experience of undertaking incident evaluation/thematic analysis.
  • Experience of working within patient safety or governance.
  • Ability to actively contribute to quality improvement plans and schedules through meetings and report writing.
  • Working knowledge of the NHS Patient Safety Incident Response Framework

Formal training in systems thinking/ Patient Safety Incident Response Framework  methodology.

  • Worked with RADAR risk management system.    
  • Ability to review and grade patient safety incidents including associated harm and Duty of Candour requirements.
